CREATORS OF THIS SONG:
José Carlos Ary dos Santos, or just Ary dos Santos (Lisboa, December 7, 1937 - Lisboa, January 18, 1984) established himself as one of the best known poets of his time by virtue of his song-writing. Having a profound impact in the late 20-th century Portuguese music, Ary dos Santos authored more than 600 hundred lyrics, voiced by the most respected Portuguese singers such as Amalia Rodrigues, Simone de Oliveira, Carlos do Carmo, Paulo de Carvalho and Fernando Tordo.

Paulo de Carvalho (born Manuel Paulo de Carvalho Costais, in Lisbon, on 15 May 1947) is a Portuguese singer. In 1985, Carvalho began professionally associating himself with Fado, deferring to Portugal's traditional music as globalization came to be seen as a threat to his homeland's cultural heritage.

SONG TEXT Lisboa Menina e Moça:

No Castelo, ponho um cotovelo
Em Alfama, descanso o olhar
E assim desfaço o novelo de azul e mar

À Ribeira encosto a cabeça
A almofada, da cama do Tejo
Com lençóis bordados à pressa
Na cambraia de um beijo

Lisboa menina e moça, menina
Da luz que meus olhos vêem tão pura
Teus seios são as colinas, varina
Pregão que me traz à porta, ternura

Cidade a ponto luz bordada
Toalha à beira mar estendida
Lisboa menina e moça, amada
Cidade mulher da minha vida

No Terreiro eu passo por ti
Mas da Graça eu vejo-te nua
Quando um pombo te olha, sorri
És mulher da rua

E no bairro mais alto do sonho
Ponho o fado que soube inventar
Aguardente de vida e medronho
Que me faz cantar

Lisboa menina e moça, menina
Da luz que os meus olhos…

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

In the Castelo I put an elbow
In Alfama, rests my sigh
And so I unravel the ball of thread of blue and see
on Ribeira I put down my head
the pillow of Tejo’s bed
with sheets embroidered in a hurry
On the lightness of a kiss
Lisbon, girl and young woman, girl
By the light of my eyes (you are) so pure
Your breasts are the hills, varina
Cry that brings tenderness to my door
City embroidered with light stitches
tablecloth unfolded by the seaside
Lisbon, girl and young woman, loved one
City, woman of my life
On the Terreiro I pass by you
But of Graça I see you naked
when a pigeon looks at you, it smiles
you are a woman of the streets
and on the highest neighborhood of dreams
I put the fado that I was able to invent
Spirit of life and medronho
that makes me sing
Lisbon, girl and young woman, girl
By the light of my eyes (you are) so pure
Your breasts are the hills, varina
Cry that brings tenderness to my door
City embroidered with light stitches
tablecloth by the seaside unfolded
Lisbon, girl and young woman, loved one
City, woman of my life
Lisbon, on my love resting
City by my hands undressed
Lisbon, girl and young woman, loved one
City, woman of my life
