At least 12 people were killed after a tree fell on a crowd in front of a church at the Festa da Senhora do Monte festival, near Funchal, Madeira, on Tuesday.

Reportedly a further 35 people were injured in the incident as they awaited the annual street procession.

Thousands of guests travel on August 14 and 15 to the traditional religious festival which takes place in the village of Monte, near the islands’ capital Funchal.
