In the year 1666, the French explorer Francois Bernier went to the Sundarbans. This is a huge stretch of swampy marshland in eastern India and western Bangladesh. And he wrote that traveling in the marshes was extremely dangerous because as soon as you wanted to land your boat at least one person would be killed by a tiger. He said “These ferocious animals are so brave that they will enter the boat itself, and they will also carry away men as they sleep.”
