(3 May 2017) Ten years on, the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann, who vanished from a vacation home in Portugal, remains unsolved.
In Praia da Luz, on the day marking the tenth anniversary of her disappearance, the shadow of the little girl lingers.
Ilja Buijsse, who lived in Praia da Luz at the time of the disappearance, says she still thinks about what happened.
"I still think about it when I see a little blonde girl walking around," she says.
Madeleine McCann, also known as Maddie, disappeared when her parents had gone out to a tapas bar nearby after putting her and her twin siblings to bed.
How and why it happened is still largely a mystery.
Madalena Duarte, a Praia da Luz resident, insists that the truth "needs to be revealed".
In April, Scotland Yard said that detectives were still pursuing "critical" leads to trace Madeleine, who disappeared from a vacation home in Portugal's Algarve region on the night of May 3, 2007.
Despite an investigation costing more than 11 million pounds (14 million US dollars) so far, police said there was no "definitive evidence" on whether Madeleine - who would be almost 14 now - is alive or dead.
One theory that police say hasn't been ruled out is a "burglary gone wrong."
The case has sparked global interest partly because of the McCanns' campaign to publicize their case in an attempt to find Madeleine.
In an interview with the British media released in April, the McCanns said they were still hopeful they will one day be reunited with their daughter.
