Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana, my father Clinton, my mother Julie and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid Winter time as we give you a tour around our dear friends farm house, which is for sale, in a rural mountain village in central Portugal.

I start the virtual tour by introducing myself as I explain the reason behind our neighbour and friend selling her farm in central Portugal, we are not estate agents and have no financial involvement in the sale of this property but we believe this to be one of the most beautiful farms around and a bargain too, so it is our pleasure to help out our lovely friend and neighbour, Rosa.

We start the tour by walking down the long 1km private driveway, spotting all the different trees, chestnuts, cherries and of course big, beautiful, mature olive trees. The track runs from one village to the next and is only used by Rosa on this farm, and the neighbour Jose, another dear friend of mine, both ends are accessed by a tarmac road some 1km away. The farms that are up this track do not have any houses on them, so the track would be only used by the odd tractor driving up to their own land, which I am sure you would quickly become used to who is who and share greetings as and when they passed.

Once at the farm I start by showing the lovely gateway, it was unfinished due to Rosas husbands unfortunate death. Then we can see in the foreground the farms terraces which are all filled with mature fruit trees, this farm boasts unspoiled panoramic views in the distance of the beautiful Serra da Estrela mountain range, you can see the peak of the mountain which is mainland Portugal's highest point, at 1,993 metres altitude.

I make my way through the huge cork oaks, which are centuries old to the south border of the property, where I show you my friend, Jose's fishing / irrigation pond, he lets me fish on some of his lakes on his land sometimes, as he stocks them with largemouth bass!

Then as we jump back onto the land we enter the medronho forest, or strawberry fruit, which is a small red fruit with a juicy, almost soft peach like taste, these fruits can be made into agaurdente, or moonshine / brandy. They say if you eat enough of the fruits you can actually become drunk, not sure I want to try that though!

With medronho seeds in my mouth I make my way to the rear side of the first stone cottage, we took a look around the exterior of the property and then made our way inside, of course the two stone buildings need some renovation work, but they are already much further ahead in the construction than most other stone cottages for sale in the area. Inside we see the downstairs has a hallway, a fair sized bathroom and a large empty room for reconstruction, the property is large standing at about 80m2 roughly!

Then onto the upstairs we see this part of the house is a little further along in the reconstruction process with a granite bar and a large fireplace. This room would make a lovely lounge / kitchen in my opinion. All the electricity, gas lines, pluming etc is already in place so really it is only internal works this property needs, also you can see the roof tiles are relatively new!

Once we head back to our farm I feel a bit peckish due to the long walk, so I rustle up some tuna steaks, using a nice dijon mustard, mixed cracked pepper, lemon juice and olive oil rub. It was delicious and I recommend you try my recipe!

At the very end of the day my mother and I set off for the sheep pastures, where we have more baby lambs being born every day now!

See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!

- Growing vegetables, raising meat and foraging on our cherry farm in Portugal’s Beira baixa.
