Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant / expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in late Summertime as we are given a tour around our friends farmhouse, which is for sale, in a rural mountain village in central Portugal.

We start the virtual tour by introducing ourselves on a beautiful private track leading down to the farm as we explain the location of this wonderful gem of a farm and a little about the surroundings and local amenities.

We begin by walking up the long private shingle track, which gives fantastic access to the farm. Then we step onto the property itself, the first thing we see as we look around is electricity posts connecting to this farm, then we walk down towards the little building on the land. It is a 28m2 building made from breeze block. It can be increased in size though to make it a larger building if needed.

Mariana and I both walk inside the little building and take a look around at all of the old tools and instruments for agriculture. There are lots of signs that this place once had a lot of life in it, I hope this comes back to this beautiful place.

After the building we walk past the olive grove, which has a few hundred olive trees, some new, some mature. Then we see the large irrigation pond, along with an army of frogs jumping into it. The water level is still high compared to a lot of farms I have seen in the area and after the drought which we have been having means that this pond never runs dry.

Following the channel that has been dug down from the pond you can see a large irrigation pipe, with a wheel tap. This used to irrigate the owner's vegetable patch.

There are numerous healthy, young fruit trees planted alongside the pond, including but not limited to orange, tangerine, lemon, cherry, apple, pear, fig & more!

As we walk down the western fence line, we can see the extent of the vineyard, it is large and has a lot of healthy mature vines, this would produce a good few hundred litres of wine every year!

I wish you all a very pleasant week ahead and I hope to see you all in the next one! Bye bye for now!

See our journey to self-sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!
